Hard epoxy vs. flexible epoxy: How should you choose for smart water meters?

With the widespread adoption of smart water meters in urban management, the issue of meter sealing has become one of the key concerns. Typically, after installation, smart water meters require sealing to prevent internal leaks and other problems. In this process, the use of potting compounds is particularly critical. So, how should you choose between rigid epoxy and flexible epoxy? Neither is inherently “better”; the choice ultimately depends on the specific application scenario.

As a specialized material designed to seal water meters, the encapsulating adhesive for smart water meters plays a crucial role. First, potting compounds offer excellent adhesion and sealing performance, effectively preventing internal leaks in water meters. Second, they can withstand a range of temperature fluctuations and water pressures, ensuring the meter’s reliability across diverse operating conditions. Additionally, using potting compounds helps extend the meter’s service life and reduce maintenance costs.

However, to achieve a reliable solution to the sealing challenges of smart water meters, both the selection of potting compounds and the application process are critical steps. Hinnel’s smart water meter epoxy encapsulant is a high-performance potting material, specifically designed for the manufacture of smart water meters, and boasts several notable advantages:

1. Excellent bonding strength: It can adhere firmly to circuit boards and electronic modules, ensuring the durability and stability of the potting performance. In particular, flexible epoxy potting compounds, after encapsulating electronic modules, can accommodate a certain degree of deformation, thereby enhancing the equipment’s seismic resistance.

2. Excellent sealing and waterproof performance: Epoxy potting compound adheres tightly to the circuit board surface, forming a robust waterproof barrier that effectively prevents the ingress of moisture and humidity, ensuring stable operation of smart water meters under a wide range of environmental conditions.

3. Excellent weather resistance and corrosion resistance: It can resist degradation from external environmental factors, including chemical exposure and atmospheric conditions, thereby maintaining long-term, stable waterproof performance.

4. Environmentally friendly and non-toxic: It aligns with modern green and environmentally friendly principles. During both production and use, it does not emit harmful substances and is harmless to the environment and human health.

The following are two recommended potting compounds for smart water meters:

[HNEP6220 Rigid Epoxy Potting Compound]

The HNEP6220 series is a two-component, filler-free, transparent epoxy encapsulant. It can cure at room temperature or with heat. After mixing, it exhibits low viscosity, excellent processability, and rapid curing; the cured product is environmentally friendly, highly transparent, and boasts outstanding toughness, making it well suited for protecting electronic components in humid and vibration‑prone environments.

Features and Advantages:

  • Excellent waterproof performance
  • Moderate curing speed
  • Low heat of reaction during curing
  • Dual 85°C and thermal cycling resistance
  • It exhibits excellent adhesion to metal and plastic housings.

Disadvantages: It is highly brittle, prone to internal stresses at low temperatures, and susceptible to cracking under thermal cycling; once cured, it becomes rigid and cannot be repaired.

Scope of Application: Indoor water meters, with minimal ambient temperature differences and no severe low-temperature cycling, prioritize high cost-effectiveness; the circuit board’s fine gaps are thoroughly filled to enhance impact resistance.

[HNEP6230 Flexible Epoxy Potting Compound]

The HNEP6230 series is a two-component, filler-free, transparent, flexible epoxy encapsulant. Supports room-temperature and heat‑curing. After mixing, it exhibits low viscosity, excellent processability, and rapid curing; the cured product is environmentally friendly, highly transparent, and boasts superior flexibility, making it ideal for protecting electronic components in humid and vibration‑prone environments.

Features and Advantages:

  • Flexible and low-stress
  • The curing rate is moderate.
  • Dual 85°C and thermal cycling resistance
  • Excellent self-foaming performance
  • It exhibits excellent adhesion to metal and plastic housings.

Disadvantages: Its hardness is lower than that of rigid epoxy, its resistance to external impacts is slightly inferior, and its cost is higher than that of standard rigid epoxy.

Scope of Application: For outdoor and underground smart water meters, as well as products designed for northern low-temperature conditions with significant thermal differentials and continuous pipeline vibrations, this solution can reduce the risk of adhesive layer cracking.

Many manufacturers choose the right adhesive, yet problems still arise. The root causes of water seepage, blistering, and cracking are improper construction practices. Water meter potting places extremely high demands on the manufacturing process; the following critical steps must be strictly controlled:

1. Pre-treatment of the substrate prior to grouting: Thoroughly Clean dust, oil, and moisture from the water meter housing, PCB board, and component surfaces. , In humid environments, pre‑drying is required. Impurities within the joint can obstruct adhesive penetration, leading to inadequate filling and, in the long term, water ingress and delamination—common yet often overlooked causes of failure.

2. Viscosity and filler compatibility: Fine circuits, 0.1–0.3 mm micro-gaps, Low-viscosity, self-leveling adhesive must be used to rely on capillary action to fill gaps; for large gaps and stepped structures, thixotropic adhesives should be selected to prevent sagging. It is strictly prohibited to directly pot precision gaps with high-viscosity adhesives, as this will inevitably result in internal voids.

3. Vacuum potting eliminates air bubbles: For deep‑cavity, multi‑layer circuit board water meters, it is essential to use vacuum potting. Atmospheric‑pressure encapsulation readily traps air, resulting in hidden bubbles. During subsequent temperature fluctuations, these bubbles expand and contract, leading to cracking of the adhesive layer and ingress of moisture, which can directly cause the meter to fail.

4. Strict Mixing Ratio and Curing: The two-component adhesive must be mixed according to the specified ratio and thoroughly stirred to prevent localized under‑curing or stickiness. Select either room-temperature curing or heat-assisted curing based on production requirements, and ensure the curing process is free from vibration and dust contamination to maintain the integrity of the adhesive layer.

In summary, a reliable solution to the sealing issues of smart water meters hinges on the use of potting compounds. Selecting an appropriate potting compound, adhering to rigorous installation procedures, and conducting regular maintenance and inspections are all critical steps in ensuring the meter’s sealing integrity. The two elastomer compounds introduced above each boast unique performance characteristics, making them well-suited to the encapsulation structures and operating environments of different smart water meters.
