What is the difference between solvent-free epoxy and conventional epoxy?

Although both solvent-free epoxy coatings and conventional solvent-borne epoxy coatings belong to the epoxy system, they differ fundamentally in terms of environmental friendliness, application processes, coating performance, and scope of use. This paper conducts a comparative analysis to highlight the core differences between the two in terms of formulation, environmental compatibility, construction safety, and performance characteristics.

I. Solvent-Free Epoxy Adhesive 

Solvent-free epoxy is a coating material that contains no organic solvents; it is also referred to as waterborne epoxy. It is formulated primarily from epoxy resin, with the addition of appropriate amounts of curing agents, additives, and fillers. Compared with conventional solvent-based epoxy coatings, solvent-free epoxy offers numerous advantages, including environmental friendliness, excellent chemical resistance, uniform film formation, high hardness, and strong adhesion. 

 

II. Solvent-based epoxy adhesive 

Conventional epoxy typically refers to epoxy materials that contain volatile organic compounds. Its formulation generally includes epoxy resin, a curing agent, solvents, and various additives. Conventional epoxy is suitable for a wide range of applications, such as construction, coatings, and shipbuilding; however, because it contains solvents, it can lead to VOC emissions and pose health risks to humans. 

 

III. Construction Performance of the Two 

Solvent-free epoxy coatings can achieve relatively thick film thickness in a single coat, reducing the number of coats and improving application efficiency; however, their drying rate is highly sensitive to ambient temperature. In contrast, solvent-borne epoxy anti-corrosion coatings dry more quickly due to the presence of solvents, but multiple coats are typically required to attain the desired film thickness.

1. Solvent-Free Epoxy Application Scenarios 

Solvent-free epoxy is primarily used in high-demand applications such as food processing, pharmaceuticals, environmental protection, water conservancy, and aerospace. For instance, in the food-processing industry, solvent-free epoxy resin is a safe, reliable material that meets stringent hygiene standards and is widely employed in the manufacture of food-processing equipment and production lines.

2. Application scenarios for solvent-based epoxy 

Compared with solvent-free epoxies, solvent-borne epoxies exhibit superior flow and better coating adhesion. Consequently, they are more suitable for applications requiring high adhesion, such as automotive coatings, marine paints, floor coatings, and coatings for electronic and electrical appliance housings. 

 

V. How to Choose 

Depending on the specific application scenario and requirements, it is essential to select the appropriate epoxy material based on actual conditions. In general, for structural bonding, repair and reinforcement, and simple potting of materials such as metals, ceramics, stone, and rigid plastics under ambient-temperature conditions, standard epoxy systems are more suitable; whereas for applications in industrial equipment and other environments with stricter environmental requirements, solvent-free epoxy systems are the better choice. The final selection should take into account a wide range of factors, including procurement cost, construction requirements, work efficiency, environmental protection standards, and the operating environment.
